For six decades, Richard Bong State Recreation Area has been a wild and beautiful destination for nature enthusiasts, families, and adventure seekers. This sprawling park, named after World War II flying ace Richard I. Bong, is an easy drive from places like Milwaukee and it’s the perfect spot for a memorable Wisconsin day trip. Here’s why.
The Richard Bong State Recreation Area is located in Kansasville, in Racine County. It’s just 40 minutes from the heart of downtown Milwaukee but it feels a world away.
There’s a lot to do in the park, including mountian biking, swimming, dogsledding, falconry, ATV riding, land sailing, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and more. The park is a playground for all ages!
The park is a haven for birdwatchers and nature photographers – it has an abundance of bird species and scenic vistas that are perfect for capturing unforgettable moments and plenty of wetlands that birds love. The park is home to gorgeous species like blue herons and sandhill cranes.
This is a place that’s gorgeous in any season. It becomes a kaleidoscope of colors in the fall, a quiet snowy wonderland in the winter, and it’s filled with vibrant blooms in the spring and summer.
Campers will also find a lot to love in this park. There are more than 200 campsites, and 54 have electric hookups. There’s also a special cabin available for people with disabilities.
