In Northern Wisconsin, you might think people would store their motorcycles and ATVs for the winter. But what fun would that be? A group of daredevils is heating up the ice in the Northland with a racing scene like no other. It’s as much fun for the spectators as it is for the participants – put on a warm coat and boots, grab some hand warmers and boot warmers, and get ready to be amazed. Here’s what’s waiting for you out on the ice at the Midwest Ice Races.
The ice races are held by the Midwest Ice Racing Association – it’s a group that was formed to bring high-quality ice racing to the Northland.
Everyone is welcome at the races – every spectator, racer, or support crew member is treated like family at these events and everyone has a great time!
There’s a seven-race season that starts in January, with five of the races held in Superior – two are in Minnesota at Mille Lacs. The races include various classes, including everything from small minibike races for kids to high-performance motorcycle and quad races for adults. There are even races for side-by-side vehicles.
There are racers aged 4-50 in the various divisions and you might be surprised by how fast these riders travel on the ice – and that they manage to stay upright!
Spectators are able to get close to the racers, so it’s thrilling to watch – this is not the sort of event where you’ll be stuck in some faraway grandstands.
Be sure to dress very warm – it goes without saying that these are very cold events. But it’s well worth pulling on a parka and a sweater. These events are a blast!
For date and admission information, check out the event’s website. If you’re interested in racing, you can also find participant information on the site. Good luck and stay warm! One of the races is held in conjunction with the Lake Superior Ice Festival – it’s another winter event you’ll want to put on your calendar.
