There’s no middle ground on this sandwich. In Monroe, Wisconsin, a postcard-perfect tavern serves up a sandwich that you’ll smell coming. Baumgartner’s Cheese Store & Tavern has a sandwich that’s anchored by a thick slice of Limburger cheese – yep, the cheese that some say smells like an old sock.
Others disagree and say that all that’s missing from this sandwich is a cold Wisconsin beer.
So what do you think, masterpiece or stink sandwich? Read on and try to make up your mind.
Monroe is a town of about 10,000 in southern Wisconsin that was settled by Swiss immigrants. That heritage is on full display at Baumgartner's, which is located in the center of Monroe on the town square.
The cheese store and tavern opened in 1931 and is Wisconsin's oldest cheese store. It's a timeless gathering spot that might remind you of another era.
You'll find plenty of locals as well as travelers dropping in. The business has received a ton of publicity, including articles in national publications and an appearance on the Travel Channel.
A big part of that publicity can be attributed to the sandwich: it's made with local Limburger cheese, a thick slice of red onion, served on dark rye bread. If you're still hungry, feel free to wash it down with cheese and sausage!
Monroe is the center of cheese and beer country, so a trip to Baumgartner’s can be paired with a trip to a cheese factory or brewery. And don’t miss Cheese Days, held the third weekend of September on even-numbered years. It’s been taking place since 1914 and Baumgartner’s is the center of the action! Once you’ve downed a Limburger sandwich, here are some more sandwiches to try before you die!
