You’ll find scores of routes to choose from when trying to pick a scenic drive in Wisconsin, but for some of the most spectacular views, head to the far north. The Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway is a scenic route that traces the southern shore of Lake Superior. It’s one of the most scenic drives in Wisconsin, and here’s a sample of what you can discover on along the way.
The drive follows Wisconsin State Highway 13 along the Bayfield Peninsula. It’s about as far north as you can go in Wisconsin without wading into Lake Superior.
You can start the drive at a roundabout that’s just west of Ashland. It will take you north and then west to the intersection of County Highway H and State Highway 13 in the Town of Cloverland.
On the drive, you’ll pass Lake Superior harbor towns, fishing villages, and orchards and farms. During the fall, you may want to pull over to buy some apples.
Throughout the year, the byway offers beautiful views of fall foliage, winter snowscapes, cute towns, and spring wildflowers. It's a great way to experience the natural beauty of Lake Superior and northern Wisconsin.
There’s plenty to do on or near the drive, so you’ll want to allow plenty of time to follow this route. There are numerous parks, beaches, and trails to explore, including the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Copper Falls State Park, and Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
