When you’re traveling and need a rest stop, they can be indispensable. But some rest stops offer far more than bathrooms and parking spots. In far Northern Wisconsin, there’s a rest stop that’s a destination in itself. This Wisconsin rest stop is located in Hurley, and it’s a place that will take you back to the region’s mining days. Here’s why you need to pull over at Rest Stop 103.
You’ll find this gem of a rest stop south of the Wisconsin border with the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It’s located in Iron County, Wisconsin, not far from scenic attractions like Interstate Falls Park.
Its history is deeply intertwined with the boom and bust cycles of the mining era, and remnants of this heritage can still be seen throughout the area.
The rest stop, known as “Safety Rest Area 103,” has all the things you’d expect at a rest area, including a parking lot with 25 car and eight truck spaces. There’s also a picnic area, a pet exercise area, diaper changing facilities, vending machines, visitor information, and drinking water.
But there’s more to this place than the basics. For starters, there’s a giant sun dial. If you’re unsure of the time, take a look - as long as the sun is shining!
The inside of the rest area is like a museum. It’s filled with information about the mining era, including art and artifacts, old photos and a “miner” that you can meet. You may be inspired to explore more mining history in the area – there are some interesting sites not far away, including places where you can venture underground.
There are certainly much bigger museums in Wisconsin, but considering the fact that this is tucked into what could be an ordinary rest area, it’s pretty great. It’s a wonderful way to take a break from a long Northwoods drive.
The first time I pulled into this rest area it was during a small snow squall. The wind tore at my coat, and snow was drifting in the parking lot. It was early October – welcome to northern Wisconsin! Learn more about Rest Stop 103 on the Wisconsin Department of Transportation website.
