If you’re someone who appreciates Wisconsin’s great outdoors, you’ve likely experienced or at least heard of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. This 1,200-mile trek winds through ancient ice-age formations, breathtaking landscapes, and some of the state’s most charming communities. During the month of October, the Ice Age Trail Alliance is hosting a free event that will showcase the best of the trail. The Mammoth Hike Challenge is an invitation to complete any 41 miles of the trail and experience at least three of the unique towns along the way.
Throughout the entire month of October, you're invited to participate in a free, family-friendly event known as the Mammoth Hike Challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to get visitors out on the trail in whatever way they're most comfortable with.
Whether that's an epic backpacking trip, smaller hikes over a few weekends, or a stroll with friends, participants will leave with a renewed sense of adventure and appreciation for the Ice Age Trail.
This beloved trail showcases some of Wisconsin's most stunning natural scenery, from densely wooded forests to lakes, rivers, and prairies. And it all began during the most recent period of the Ice Age, approximately 10,000 years ago! Learn more about this fascinating geology.
While the trail is the focus of the experience, the surrounding communities are equally as impressive. In addition to logging 41 miles, you'll also need to stop by at least three trail communities.
The town of Delafield makes for a great stop-over. It's here you'll experience unparalleled small-town hospitality, delicious dining, and charming storefronts.
The 3.5-mile Delafield Segment winds through downtown Delafield and a part of the Lake Country Recreation Trail, highlighting the bustling downtown with historic Williamsburg architecture. The area is rich with the vast prairies and oak savannas of Lapham Peak, award-winning restaurants, historical sites, local artisans, and enjoyable strolls along the Trail. Other trail communities include St. Croix Falls, Lodi, Janesville, West Bend, Cornell, Cross Plains, Milton, Hartland, Manitowoc-Two Rivers, Antigo, Verona, Whitewater, Slinger, and Sturgeon Bay.
One of the best parts about the Mammoth Hike Challenge is that it's completely customizable. You can hike your favorite portions or try out some new-to-you routes. Immersed in the natural landscape, you won't help but feel connected to nature and the communities you encounter along the way.
Registration is completely free and will include Mammoth Hike Challenge itineraries highlighting Ice Age Trail Communities, local businesses, attractions, and nearby Ice Age Trail segments.
When you complete the challenge, you'll earn an official hiking certificate and a limited-edition patch. Not to mention the memories that will surely last a lifetime!
In order to qualify for the certificate and patch, participants will need to register in advance.
