Some pretty amazing things have happened in Wisconsin. But, some pretty terrible things have happened, too. We are going to look back at some of the most tragic things to have happened in Wisconsin. Not to be a Debbie Downer or anything.
1. Great Peshtigo Fire
Many people have forgotten about the Great Peshtigo Fire, mainly because it occurred on the same exact day as the Great Chicago Fire. But actually, the Great Peshtigo Fire was the deadliest in US history. Around 1500 people perished as a result of the fire.
2. Bay View Massacre
In 1886, workers began assembling to protest for better working conditions and terms. Striking workers were prohibited from approaching the mill. When they did so, they were shot at. Several people died, including a young boy.
3. Barneveld Tornadoes
In 1984, there was a tornado outbreak across a lot of the US. It affected the town of Barneveld, as an F5 tornado blew through the town, killing 9.
4. Cottonville Forest Fire
In 2005, a fire to burn grass became out of control, burning over 3100 acres in Big Flats, and destroying 30 homes.
5. Wisconsin Sikh Temple Shooting
In 2012, Wade Michael Page shot up the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, wounding four and killing six.
6. Slenderman Attack
In 2014, two girls lured their friend into the woods and attempted to murder her. Their goal was to please a fictional character named Slenderman. While the girl received numerous stab wounds, she was fortunately discovered by a passing bicyclist and her life was saved.
7. Big Blue Tragedy
In 1999, a crane collapsed during the construction of Miller Park. Three workers were killed as a result.
