Wisconsin has changed over the years, but while some things change, many things stay the same. When I think about the past, general stores come to mind. You know, the stores that sell a little bit of everything–clothing, candy, feed–and all with personalized service. There are still a bunch of general stores in existence in Wisconsin. Here are ten you might want to check out:
1. General Store of Adams (Adams)
*Please note, General Store of Adams is no longer in business.
The General Store of Adams offers a wide variety of items that change all the time--from artwork to decor to all sorts of other things.
2. Kuhtz General Store (Oconomowoc)
Back in 1926, the patriarch Paul Kuhtz traded a farm for a store. Since then, the family has been in business. You'll find all sorts of neat things, but get some candy and ice cream and step back in time.
3, Hazel General Store (Madison)
This is definitely not your classic general store--but there is something for everyone. There are all sorts of goods here made by people from around the United States. Think ETSY but brick and mortar.
4. Spring Green General Store Cafe (Spring Green)
Not only can you shop here, but you can get a darn good meal, too. The building is interesting, as it was converted from a 1910 cheese warehouse.
5. The Spooner General Store (Whitewater)
At the Spooner, you'll find all sorts of neat gifts and--more importantly--tasty treats. People LOVE their fudge.
6. Sugar River General Store (Albany)
It's a general store, but what it really is is a fantastic ice cream shop. And they sell sandwiches. You'll love it.
7. New Diggings General Store and Inn
Located in one of Wisconsin's oldest towns, the General Store is in a structure from 1844. Yes, you read that correctly. It's a really neat place to get a drink.
8. Stockholm Pie and General Store (Stockholm)
Did someone say pie? Yeah. The pies are handmade and awesome. But they also feature a lot of goods from across Wisconsin, including cheese, brews, wines, and other Wisconsin treats.
9. The Merchant General Store (Black River Falls)
This store is full of history, dating back to 1912. So it's a real step back in time. Find antiques, collectibles and old time candy--and more!
10. Ehlers Store (Cornucopia)
This place has been around for 100 years and continues to evolve. Find organic produce and groceries, and eat from the delicious deli.
