Green beer isn’t just for St. Patrick’s Day. A Wisconsin brewery is crafting some wonderful offerings that are as easy on the planet as they are the palate. Central Waters Brewing Company has taken many steps to be a “green” brewery, including sourcing hops and other ingredients from local farms. It’s one of Wisconsin’s best breweries and it’s worth a visit. Here’s why.
You’ll find Central Waters Brewing in Amherst, Wisconsin, a central Wisconsin community that’s not far from places like Stevens Point and Wausau. It’s an easy day trip from much of the state.
One of the most eye-catching things the brewery has done is make use of solar energy. It has a 1,000-square-foot solar thermal array that heats water for the facility and a 120,000 watt photo-voltaic array that offsets the brewery’s energy needs.
The brewery does a lot of small things to make a big difference. It uses LED lighting with motion detecting switches, it monitors and conserves water resources, and it conserves and reuses brewing chemicals.
The ingredients of the brewery’s awesome beers are grown locally. The barley comes from Briess Malting Company in Chilton and the hops come from local farmers. Central Waters is one of the founding breweries of the Midwest Hops and Barley Co-op, which is an collaborative that produces hops on local farms.
While the brewery does a lot of things that are good for the planet, its beers are good for the soul. The brewery’s classic offerings include Mudpuppy Porter, Ouisconsing Red Ale, Rift IPA, and others. They are all great!
The Central Waters Taproom is also environmentally friendly – it was made with recycled materials. Learn more about this amazing green brewery on the Central Waters website. If you want to extend your visit, here’s an amazing eco-friendly cabin rental nearby.
