Though we have not encountered the crisp, fall weather quite yet here in Wisconsin, it’s certainly on the way and we can’t wait. With colorful leaves, apple orchards, and breaking out the sweaters and boots once again, there’s little better than autumn in Wisconsin. And while we love all of the phenomenal autumn activities found across the state, this leisurely hike through one of Wisconsin’s last remaining covered bridges is at the top of our fall bucket list. Let’s take a look at this dreamy destination, shall we?
More than 40 covered bridges used to dot the Wisconsin countryside, but today, there are just a few lone survivors, including the gem we’re talking about today that crosses Cedar Creek.
Originally known as the "Red Bridge," this striking slice of history is found within Covered Bridge Park, 3 miles north of Cedarburg and 20 miles north of Milwaukee.
Built in 1876 by the Town of Cedarburg on a petition of neighboring farmers, this covered bridge originally measured in at 120 feet long and 12 feet wide. It is often referred to as the last covered bridge in Wisconsin and was used for nearly a century before being decommissioned in 1962.
More of a leisurely stroll than a hike, anyone can hit the trails at Wisconsin’s Covered Bridge Park. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the grass, and don’t forget your camera — you’ll find countless photo ops throughout your visit.
While you will surely enjoy your visit to this quaint park any time of year, there’s something special about visiting when the foliage is on full display.
As a lasting vestige of the agricultural economy that has been slowly fading in Ozaukee County throughout the decades, Covered Bridge Park will transport you to a different time and is the perfect destination for an autumn day trip.
Covered Bridge Park is located in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. For more information, click here. If you’ve visited this park that is as pretty as it is historic, share your experience with us in the comments below.
