Is there something in the water (or milk) here? Wisconsin has produced some of the absolute worst human beings ever. Really. We are taking a look at the stories of four serial killers born in four Wisconsin cities.
1. Milwaukee
Walter Ellis caused hysteria in Milwaukee. He killed seven women between 1986-2007, strangling them. He was finally apprehended and sentenced but ended up dying in prison just three years into his sentence.
2. Oshkosh
David Spanbauer was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 1941. Spanbauer went on a killing spree of three women in the mid-1990s. He was troubled during his childhood, experiencing a strained relationship with his father. He started out robbing homes in the 1960s. He also became a rapist, and once those crimes were discovered, he was sentenced to prison. But he got out in the 1970s. While he tried to make a better life for himself, he fell into old patterns. This time, he progressed to murder. He killed two young girls from the Fox Valley and an Appleton woman. He died in prison in 2002.
3. La Crosse
La Crosse was the birthplace of Ed Gein. His childhood included a strained relationship between his parents. Eventually, his mother moved to a farm in Plainfield, Wisconsin. Things started to get weird when Ed's brother was found dead. They ruled it accidental, but bruises were found all over the head. But authorities never did anything, and Ed lived alone with his mother. His mother suffered a series of strokes and died, and his was the straw that broke the camel's back. Gein became interested in death-cult magazines and Nazis. Gein abducted and killed at least two women. But he is most famous for exhuming bodies of people and taking parts home as "souvenirs." He is said to have made 40 trips to the cemetery. He planned to take his artifacts to recreate his mother so that he could crawl into her skin. Fortunately, authorities eventually apprehended him and he died at Mendota Mental Health Institute in 1984.
4. West Allis
West Allis is home to one of the most notorious serial killers in American history: Jeffrey Dahmer. Dahmer was born in West Allis in 1960. He developed a bizarre interest in animals and anatomy at a young age and was very isolated as a youth. He started abusing alcohol and having disturbing thoughts. He committed his first murder of a male while he was still a teenager. He committed several other murders, soliciting men to his apartment, murdering them, and then eating them. One of his victims was able to escape and alerted authorities. Dahmer plead guilty but insane to 15 counts of murder. He was sentenced to prison, where he was bludgeoned to death by fellow inmates in 1994.
That was thoroughly disturbing!
