David Spanbauer was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 1941. Spanbauer went on a killing spree of three women in the mid-1990s. He was troubled during his childhood, experiencing a strained relationship with his father. He started out robbing homes in the 1960s. He also became a rapist, and once those crimes were discovered, he was sentenced to prison. But he got out in the 1970s. While he tried to make a better life for himself, he fell into old patterns. This time, he progressed to murder. He killed two young girls from the Fox Valley and an Appleton woman. He died in prison in 2002.

La Crosse was the birthplace of Ed Gein. His childhood included a strained relationship between his parents. Eventually, his mother moved to a farm in Plainfield, Wisconsin.
