The Apostle Islands Sea Shore on Lake Superior is one of the most beautiful parts of our state. Whatever the season, these unique formations that have been created by hundreds of years of waves and weather are something that have to be seen to be believed. Many visitors to the area go out on kayaks in the warmer weather, but that’s not always an option for everyone. But never fear, there’s another option that can get you almost as close!
These small motor boats can enter many of the caves and get you up close and personal. They carry three to six people and offer a quick and non-physical way to check out this wonderful part of our great state.
Sometimes, you don't have the time, energy or capability to get out on Lake Superior on your own. When that's the case, you're going to want to turn to Good Earth Outfitters. Captain Mike is a born and raised local with 35 years of boating experience here in the islands. He also has 20 years with a US Coast Guard Captain's license. He knows the area deeply and loves sharing that knowledge with his passengers.
There are a lot of things to love about Good Earth Outfitter's trips, but maybe the biggest one is how small the boat is. This isn't an overwhelming tourist trip. The boat carries six and its small size allows you to get up close, personal and sometimes inside the sea caves.
Good Earth is the best option for when you don't have the opportunity to get on a kayak - no one else will get you closer or better looks at the caves.
The tour leaves out of Cornucopia Harbor, which is beautiful and picturesque all on its own. From there, you'll have a 90 minute boat tour of which the company tries to spend 60 minutes in the caves.
The caves are the product of years of weather sculpting the sandstone edges of the islands and mainland. Beautiful formations are constantly changing and provide you a look at layers and layers of stratification and history.
Every new storm and wave changes the formations, meaning you'll never have the same view twice. This might be the best 90 minutes you can spend anywhere on the Lake Superior shores.
Tickets are $60 for adults and $50 for kids and the boat doesn't run with less than three people on it. The whole trip is always subject to lightning and water conditions - safety is of utmost importance.
If you're looking for an amazing way to see the sea caves, these tours just cannot be beat. You'll feel like you've got through the Looking Glass in the best possible way.
