The home was built in 1892 for Nymphus B. Holway, and his wife, Jessie, by local architects Hugo Schick and Gustav Stolze. No expense was spared - they aimed to build a true castle, complete with a solid limestone exterior.

The castle features a tower that rises above the home, a hallmark of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. While the lumber baron died before the home was complete, his wife lived here until 1920. She sold the castle to the Diocese of La Crosse, which used it as a bishop's residence before selling the building to a private buyer.

The first thing guests encounter when they enter the castle is the grand staircase. These beautiful stairs lead the way to the guest suites, passing ornate wood carvings and delicate stained glass windows.
