Hiking into the clouds can make you a little hungry. In the scenic little river town of Trempealeau, there’s a delightful little cafe in the shadow of one of Wisconsin’s prettiest state parks. It’s a combination that’s hard to beat. Here’s why you need to visit The Station and Perrot State Park – one of the best foodie hikes in Wisconsin that you can take.
Trempealeau is located in western Wisconsin, about 20 miles north of La Crosse. The town is nestled between the Trempealeau River and the Mississippi River.
Trempealeau is known for its incredible natural beauty. The town is right on the Mississippi River, and it’s surrounded by lush forests, rolling hills, and the iconic Perrot State Park. The park features Brady's Bluff, a 500-foot bluff that provides panoramic views of the Mississippi River and the surrounding countryside.
What I needed was back in town. Historic Trempealeau is filled with historic buildings, unique shops, and local eateries. It’s all right outside the park.
Some of the best hiking food can be found right in the heart of town. Just look for the old train car. The Station is a business that’s home to Ma’s Kitchen – it’s a restaurant and deli that has food that’s perfect for people on the move. In fact, you may want to stop here before hiking a step.
If you need a little meal to carry up the bluff, consider a Grab N’ Go option. There are some great sandwiches, like turkey and provolone or ham and cheddar, and you can get a box lunch that also includes chips and something sweet for dessert. Just don’t forget to get a picture by the old train car!
Learn more about Perrot State Park on the state Department of Natural Resources website and The Station on the restaurant’s website. You won’t regret stopping at the station – the business has a big following in town, and the owner is pretty awesome in her own right. Hungry for more adventures? Here’s where to find some of the state’s top attractions.
