Legend has it that a young man in Seymour, WI invented the hamburger in 1885. There are plenty of folks who will debate that, but there’s one burger-related thing that is uniquely Wisconsin – the butter burger.
Whether it’s a fully buttered and toasted bun, a drippy, melty pat on top of your patty or butter mixed right in with the ground meat, there’s no disputing that America’s Dairyland has the market on butter burgers cornered.
There are a ton of great places across Wisconsin that serve a delicious, drippy, buttery mess of a burger, but here, in no particular order, are 10 of the best.
1. Solly's Grille - 4629 N Port Washington Rd, Glendale, WI 53212
Served on a bun or a "pillow" and positively dripping butter, there's nothing dainty or neat about a Solly's burger, but it's chock full of flavor. A small dinner with a lot of counter seating, you might have to wait at Solly's, but I promise it's worth it.
Locals rave about Mihm's and say they've never found a better burger. This diner does offer a "light butter" option but who knows why you'd want to. Bring cash - they don't accept cards.
3. Cinder's Charcoal Grill - Three locations in Appleton and Oshkosh
Other tables might be ordering fancier meals, but you're here for the burger.
They serve up increasingly interesting and deliciously topped weekly burgers or you can stick to a tried and true cheeseburger. Either way, you won't be disappointed. Don't wear your best shirt.
4. Chester's Drive-In - 504 Eastern Ave, Plymouth, WI 53073
Chester's is only open March through October, so you're out of luck until warmer weather, but bring your cash and a big appetite when the weather warms up and dig in.

5. Kroll's - Two locations, East and West, in Green Bay
With call buttons for your server and a no-frills experience, Kroll's might not be for everyone, but it does deliver a juicy, drippy, delicious butter burger that locals love and continue to come back for.
Despite its retro appearance and menu, Zesty's uses never frozen meat and no trans-fats. The custard is made fresh every couple of hours and the burgers offer the savory to balance the sweet.
7. Kopp's Frozen Custard - Three locations around the Milwaukee area
The burgers are roughly the size of your face and are still some of the best I've ever had. Make sure you get fried onions and enough of the smoky grilled taste. Pair it with a thick shake or custard of the day and have a quintessential Milwaukee meal.
8. Gosse's at the Northwestern House - 1909 Union Ave, Sheboygan, WI 53081
No one is saying Culver's is the most gourmet. But as far as fast food goes, a drive-thru Culver's will provide a delicious, fresh burger with a butter rich bun. Add a custard shake and some cheese curds and it's pretty hard to go wrong.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but everyone’s got to have goals. Where else should we be heading to find this iconic Wisconsin treat?
