The little town of Horicon doens’t have any huge buildings or giant bridges. It’s not on a major interstate highway and you won’t find any world-famous monuments here, either. But what Horiocon does have is very, very special. Want to see what’s great about this quiet Wisconsin town? Just look up.
Horicon is located at the base of one of the true wonders of Wisconsin – the Horicon Marsh. It’s a huge area of wetlands that includes both a state and national wildlife refuge.
The city of Horicon is a quiet little town, with about 3,600 people. It was founded as a lumber town and today is home of the John Deere Horicon Works, which produces lawn and garden tractors, golf and turf reel mowers, and utility vehicles. There’s also a lot of productive farmland near the town.
Horicon also has a seasonal tourism business. Visitors flock to the town for the chance to witness an incredible migration of Canada geese – they pass through in the spring and the fall. As many as 200,000 geese pass the town!
Horicon is located at the southernmost tip of the marsh and geese fly right over the city as they stop in the marsh on their seasonal journey. The flocks are massive and the sight is breathtaking.
The city is the perfect base camp to explore the marsh. Outside of the migration season, the marsh offers a place for hiking and paddling. Scenic roads around the marsh are spectacular for a scenic road trip or bicycle adventure.
Boat tours and canoe rentals are available to explore the Horicon Marsh. Learn more about things to see and do on the Horicon Chamber of Commerce website. While you’re in the area you might want to explore the hidden canyons in this scenic county park.
