Winter is a little bigger in Northern Wisconsin. The Northwoods gets more snow, more frosty weather, and there are more opportunities for outdoor fun. So when it comes to building a snowman, an ordinary backyard creation simply won’t do. The biggest Wisconsin snowman that you’ve ever seen greets seasonal visitors to Minocqua. Here’s where to find it.
Minocqua is located in northern Oneida County – it’s a gorgeous area of lakes and forests and it has been a popular tourism destination for more than a century.
Mincoqua is a fun place in any season, but it’s awesome in the winter – it has some great cross-county ski trails, snowmobile trails, ice skating rinks and ice fishing lakes. The area gets tons of snow so it’s also a good place to build a snowman.
In fact, it’s a very good place to build a snowman. For more than 60 years, the community has been building a huge snowman in the heart of the community.
It’s no ordinary snowman – it’s a 40-foot-tall creation. The snowman’s buttons are a foot across and an orange traffic cone is used for its nose.
The town has a system for building this massive sculpture.
The snowman is built like a wedding cake, with snow fence holding together the truckloads of snow that fill each layer. It takes three days to build the snowman and the end product is pretty amazing.
The snowman is called “Snowmy Kromer,” named after the iconic Northwoods hat manufactured near here in Ironwood. Snowmy’s hat is a size 97, the largest Stormy Kromer hat in the world!
You’ll find the snowman each winter in front of the Minocqua Visitors Bureau. Learn more about things to to this season on the Let’s Minocqua! Visitor Bureau website. Packing for a winter trip north? Here’s what you need to pack on a winter trip.
