There are a lot of beautiful places to see the fall colors in Wisconsin – thousands of leaf peepers travel north, and many others flock to destinations like Door County and Lake Geneva. But to see some of the very best fall leaves, head west. The tiny town of Trempealeau welcomes visitors with a big dose of autumn color and Wisconsin history. It’s the perfect fall destination – here’s why.
Trempealeau, pop. 1,400, is located on the far south side of Trempealeau County. It’s an easy drive from places like Madison and Eau Claire.
The village is located right on the Mississippi River and people have lived here for a very long time. Ancient Native American earthwork mounds are located near the town - they are more than a thousand years old.
European settlers arrived in the mid-1800s, and a post office was established in 1852. The town was named after a nearby island that was named by a French explorer.
Today, Trempealeau is filled with historic buildings. It doesn’t take long to explore the town, but it’s an easy place to linger. You have a front-row seat to see the movement of goods and materials – long freight trains rumble through town and loaded barges amble past on the river.
Once you’ve taken in the town, no fall visit to Trempealeau is complete without a visit to Perrot State Park. The park practically explodes with fall color and it offers dramatic vistas of the river below.
Finish your day at a classic Wisconsin destination – the Trempealeau Hotel. Grab a drink at the same bar that served customers in 1888, or enjoy a comfortable fall meal while admiring a gorgeous river view.
