Dunkin’ Donuts–puh-lease. After eating my way through donuts in Wisconsin, I wouldn’t touch that place with a ten foot pole. Here are some of my favorite places to grab a donut in Wisconsin:
1. Greenbush Bakery (Madison). Okay, let's be honest--when I want a donut, I'm not looking to cut calories. Fortunately, Greenbush offers fritters THE SIZE OF YOUR HEAD.
2. Willow Street Bakery (Green Bay). They've been in business since 1966. What you can expect at Willow Street is a rich, full-fat donut, made exactly as they were back in the day. Awesome.
3. Holey Moley Coffee and Donuts (Milwaukee). They've got wacky flavors. They have vegan donuts. And yet I'm totally in love with the old fashioned sour cream donut.
4. Rosie's Coffee Bar and Bakery (Madison). Their donuts have the freshest taste I've probably ever experienced. It's also refreshing to see them fairly priced--just $1 for a donut.
5. Mike's Donuts and Chicken (Kenosha). Yes, my dear, you read that CORRECTLY. Want Nerds on a donut? How about bacon (I'm not talking little sprinkles like those guys in Cali)? This is your new favorite place.
6. Manderfield's Home Bakery (Appleton). For over seventy years, Manderfield's has been serving up the best donuts in the Fox Valley area. Now with three locations, you can get your Manderfield fix whenever you need to.
7. People's Bakery (Madison). Who knew you could get some of the best Lebanese food around along with some of the best donuts in Wisconsin? They make their donuts fresh starting at midnight every night.
8. Hill Top Bakery (Kaukauna). They've been around for seventy years, providing high quality donuts in their retail shop as well as gas stations across the area.
9. Simple Simon Bakery (Appleton). They're known more for their cakes and cupcakes, but while you're there, you should grab one of their donuts.
10. Grebe's Bakery (West Allis). Since 1937, this joint has been making some great donuts. It's always good. Watch out on Fat Tuesday, though: line is OUT the door.
Okay, I think I gained ten pounds doing “research” for this article. Time to get on the treadmill.
