The Apostle Islands are one of the most well-known landmarks in Wisconsin and for good reason. Located on the northern tip of the state, this collection of 22 islands is characterized by stunning cliffs, caves, and beautiful water views. Yet there’s another fascinating natural wonder north of Madison that is equal in its geological significance and beauty. Head to Devil’s Lake State Park and prepare to be amazed by Balanced Rock. One thing’s for sure: you’ll want to bring your camera with you!
Welcome to Devil's Lake State Park, a breathtaking point along Wisconsin's famous Ice Age National Scenic Trail.
The lake is the centerpiece of this natural space, measuring 360 acres in size. The park is characterized by breathtaking water views and massive quartzite bluffs.
Speaking of hiking, one of the park's most iconic trails will lead you someplace unforgettable. Balanced Rock Trail is a difficult 0.7-mile incline hike featuring stone steps that lead to the south face of the east bluff.
In a relatively short distance, this trail climbs nearly 500 feet in elevation. So be sure to take your time and wear sturdy shoes! Also, the trail can be narrow at times, which proves difficult when there are other hikers. It's best to attempt this trail during the weekday and earlier in the morning if possible.
Your efforts will be well rewarded when you catch a glimpse of the trail's namesake feature: Balanced Rock. This stunning formation is seemingly balanced just on the edge of the lake, offering an exquisite view of the landscape below.
