This was initially supposed to be an article about where to go in the event of a real emergency, but we got to thinking about a fictional but terrifying event: zombie outbreak! (Think Walking Dead in real life.) We knew we needed to put together a list of the best places to hide in West Virginia, just in case.
All things considered, West Virginia is a pretty good place to be if this were to happen. One list I saw says that our state is ranked 12th out of 50 states for places to be during the zombie apocalypse
Here is a list that imagines where specifically in West Virginia would be great places to hide in the event of a zombie apocalypse.

1. First, get yourself out of Charleston and Huntington.
These two cities have the highest populations in the state, which means they’re likely to have high populations of the undead, too. You do NOT want to fight a zombie in the middle of a city, do you? Every room in every building you walk into would have to be checked for zombies and you’re bound to run into some. Also it won’t take long for your resources to be depleted. Looters will probably take a lot of them.
The best way to get out of Charleston is by water. Pier 54 Marina LLC, out of Cahrleston, rents pontoon boats that you can use on the Kanawha River. To quickly depart from Huntington, Tri-State Charter can fly 7-8 people up to 1,500 nautical miles to a safe location.
I know it may seem like going underground might be a great place to hide, but think again. There are no people, but there are also definitely no resources there, and that’s a bad thing. This is the highest point in West Virginia so you definitely have a vantage point here. A bonus is this nice lookout tower that gives you an even better view of what might be coming after you. 4. Any of the state’s still-standing fire lookout towers.
The state has a few of these remaining fire lookout towers, like this one at Thorny Mountain in Seneca State Forest. They’re high enough that you can see if any zombies are coming and I bet you could drop something on their heads from this height and do some serious damage. A downside would be that there’s no running water, but considering the circumstance that seems like a luxury you could do without. These are great secluded places in West Virginia to set up a strong hold during a zombie apocalypse.
This place was actually built to house Congress in the event of a nuclear attack and was totally secret for 30 years, so it seems like a natural hiding place. It’s very secure and you could take some of the delicious food they serve at the resort into the bunker with you. If you’re living in West Virginia during the zombie apocalypse, this should be a first stop to hide out in!
Can zombies climb mountains? I’m not sure, but high in a mountain seems like a good place to hide from them. So in that regard, West Virginia has lot of opportunities to hide. Seneca Rocks is out of the state’s high population areas and there are plenty of resources to be found in nature, so it seems like a pretty good hiding place. The spot may just be how you survive the zombie apocalypse!
According to what I’ve read about zombies, suburban areas seem like a great short term option for hiding out from them. They have fewer people than big cities and you can hide in empty houses and stores. Plus, along with the empty houses and vacant stores come valuable resources: food and possibly ammo. One downside might be the chance that people from DC flee the big city and come to Martinsburg. The suburbs will be filled with abandoned places in West Virginia to hide in. Save your map of Martinsburg so you know to how to get around in a pinch.
We know that Organ Cave in Greenbrier County is a good place to hide, because during the Civil War, more than 1,000 soldiers hid here and mined saltpetre to make gun powder.
