Our state parks get a lot of attention, and for good reason, but West Virginia’s astounding nature preserves deserve some love, too! And Yankauer Nature Preserve, located along a remote stretch of the Potomac River between Shepherdstown and I-81, is an excellent example.

Along the Potomac River north of Shepherdstown lies a unique piece of nature: the Yankauer Nature Preserve.

This 104-acre plot was private land for centuries — the first known records of the property were in the mid-1700s when it was granted to colonists who were associates of George Washington. However, in 1967, they were donated to The Nature Conservancy and over the past 50 years, the native forest has been slowly reclaiming the land.
In addition to the stately oak and cedar woodland, the Preserve features beautiful displays of wildflowers in spring, and a diversity of wildlife including birds, butterflies, and deer.

Keep in mind: they do ask that you respect the natural habitat and leave your pets behind when you come.
In addition to the trails and views, just adjacent to the preserve is Whiting Neck Cave, a limestone cave full of remarkable formations and spelunking challenges.

Also of interest regarding the preserve: it is named for the couple who donated the land in 1967. The Yankauers were a prominent couple in the fields of medicine and law for decades.
