Did you know that there’s just one university in the whole nation that owns its own zipline course? And that same university is the only university in America to boast its own canopy tour? Furthermore, this university-owned zipline and canopy tour is open to the public. And the best part? This one-of-a-kind university is our very own beloved West Virginia University (WVU) in Morgantown.
West Virginia University's canopy walk and zipline course are operated by the school's Adventure WV department.
This aerial adventure course is located down the road just a bit from Morgantown (about a 30-minute drive), at the Outdoor Education Center in the beautiful Coopers Rock State Forest. What a great setting for an adventure park!
And what a great adventure park it is, with the zipline canopy course consisting of four zip-lines, seven tree-based platforms, an aerial bridge, an aerial ladder, and a rappel station.
The public can access the zipline and canopy walk for portions of the spring, summer, and fall months, but the course does close to the public in November of each year. No matter what time of year you choose to take this walk (and ride) through the trees, though, it's guaranteed to be beautiful!
The course provides an especially unique way to experience this portion of wild, wonderful West Virginia: from the point of view of a bird. Fly through the trees, perch on their branches, and soak in all the bird's eye views this canopy adventure course provides (the tallest platform is 60 feet above the ground).
There are also other aerial adventures to be had at the WVU Outdoor Education Center, including aerial trekking adventures like the Giant Swing or the Alpine Tower.
WVU students and employees do get a discount on tickets to these adventures, and WVU even incorporates these courses in some of their fields of study, including as a training component in several outdoor education certifications offered by the university.
To learn more about how you can try out the only university-sponsored zipline and canopy walk adventure course in the nation, head over to the Adventure WV website or the Adventure WV Facebook page. In addition to finding more information, you can reserve tickets for your adventure through the website. And of course, while you’re here in Coopers Rock State Forest already, don’t miss Coopers Rock Overlook!
