Like any state, West Virginia has had some dark moments. Not the least of them are the several famous killings that have taken place in the Mountain State.
1. Leah Hickman
The death of this Marshall University journalism student remains a mystery, as her killer has never been found. Hickman was strangled in December 2007 and her body found was found in a crawl space in her apartment a week later.
2. Skylar Neese, killed by her "best friends."
16-year-old Neese went missing July 6, 2012. Six months later, her best friend Rachel Shoaf told police that she and friend Shelia Eddy had stabbed Neese to death and left her body in the woods. Shoaf told police they killed her because they no longer wanted to be friends with her. Shoaf got 30 years in prison and Eddy was sentenced to life.
3. Samantha Burns
Samantha Burns was 19 in 2002 when she went missing. Burns, a student at Marshall University Community and Technical College, was driving home to see family but never made it. In 2005, two men admitted to abducting and killing her. Brandon Basham and Chadrick Fulks are on death row for killing Burns and a South Carolina woman. Burns' remains have never been found.
4. The Kanawha Sniper killings
In 2003, the sniper-style shooting deaths of three West Virginia residents rocked the entire community. Three people --Jeanie Patton, Okey Ray Meadows Jr., and Gary Carrier Jr. -- were killed as they stood at gas stations in the Kanawha Valley. Shawn Lester, suspected in all of the deaths, pleaded guilty in 2012 to Patton's death and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
5. West Virginia State Troopers Eric Workman and Marshall Bailey, killed in the line of duty
Troopers Workman and Bailey were on patrol in Clay County in August 2013, when they responded to a report of an erratic driver. They pulled over Luke Baber and arrested him, putting him into the backseat of their cruiser. While they waited for a tow truck, Baber, who was handcuffed, took out a hidden gun and shot both troopers to death. Baber was later killed by police.
6. Jody Hunt's killing rampage
A Monongalia man killed four people and then took his own life late last year. Hunt shot his ex-girlfriend, two of her boyfriends and a business competitor before turning the gun on himself.
These tragic killings sadly became a permanent part of West Virginia’s history. Can you think of any others that I missed?
