People back in the old days shopped in a lot cuter places than what we’ve got now. Or at least that’s the impression I get when I look at all the charming general stores we have in West Virginia. Many of these places are still functioning as stores. How many of these general stores in West Virginia have you been to?
One of the oldest continually operated businesses in West Virginia, according to its website. It was built in 1902 and much of the interior is original to the building.
Known now as the Country Store Museum, the Ruddell General Store was built in 1890 and was a retailer until the 1970s when it was acquired by the West Virginia State Folk Festival, Inc. and opened as the museum.

Located on the grounds of the Lost River Inn at Lost River in Hardy County, it was built in 1898 and used to also house the post office. The building was renovated during the 90s.

Colabrese Old General Store is permanently closed.
Located at 284 East Avenue in Thomas, the Colabrese Old General Store was established in 1934 and is the last remaining original store in Thomas.

Located on top of South Fork Mountain on Route 33 in Franklin, W.Va., Long Mountain General Store sells a variety of things including Case Knives, McCall’s Candles, Fiestaware, and Fenton and Blenko Glass, according to its Facebook page. It also sells groceries and sandwiches.
Built in 1900, the Prince Brothers General Store, also known as the Prince Store, is the last surviving building of the New River coal field commercial businesses dated to the turn of the 20th century, according to its Wikipedia page. The store closed in 1984 and the building is now owned by the National Park Service.
Reviewers call this place a fun store to explore. They also rave about a fluffy cat that greets visitors to the store.
