  • How many times have we all heard, “Everyone in West Virginia is a hillbilly?" It’s ridiculous to label an entire group. Unless, of course, you said something like, “Everyone in West Virginia is amazing.”
  • Another falsity associated with the state is that the movie Deliverance was set in West Virginia. To clear things up once and for all, it wasn’t. It actually took place in Georgia.

West Virginia is a pretty unique state, so it should come as no surprise that we’ve got our own language. There are some common words and phrases that take on a whole new meaning when uttered by those living in West Virginia:

  • The word peck is a great example. Most everywhere else it means a quick, platonic kiss; however, in West Virginia, it means a substantial amount.
  • And then, there’s the word blinked. Most would assume it has something to do with opening and closing one’s eyes; however, that’s not the case in West Virginia. Nope, in West Virginia, it’s used to refer to milk that’s gone sour.
