It doesn’t get a lot of positive recognition, but here in West Virginia, we have some great food. Appalachian cuisine — the stuff that our grandmothers and mothers have been making for Sunday dinners for generations — is delicious. But not all of it is appetizing to the rest of the world. Some of it is a little strange.
Here are a few examples:
1. Liver and onions
I never tried this, to be honest. But I know some people who swear by it. Do you all like it?
2. Cornbread and milk
I always had my cornbread with regular milk, but I know some people prefer it with buttermilk. Buttermilk sounds delicious, too.
3. Hot dogs with coleslaw
These are great with the addition of mustard, too.
4. Beans and cornbread
This one is definitely a traditional Appalachian dish. It's also very filling.
5. Biscuits and gravy
OK, so maybe this one is the least exclusive to West Virginia, but it's very much a favorite here.
6. Biscuits and apple butter
We love our biscuits here. And what could be better than apple butter? Definitely a fall-time favorite.
7. Ramps and potatoes
Well, ramps and anything is a combination that's unique to West Virginia. But ramps are great with potatoes.
8. Fries and gravy
These are popular in the northern part of the state. I've never had them but I'll have to try it the next time I'm up that way.
9. Barbecue sandwiches with coleslaw
This is the best way to enjoy barbecue, in my humble opinion.
Have you tried all of these? What’s your favorite strange food combination that’s popular here? What else would you add to this list?
