1. The Three Rivers Avian Center in Hinton
Three Rivers Avian Center in Hinton, a non profit dedicated to wild bird conservation and educating people. The center allows the public to view the grounds and visit the non-releasable "Raptor Ambassadors" on the first Saturday of the month May through October. For more information, visit www.tracwv.org.
2. The West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center in Fairmont
The Raptor Rehabilitation Center cares for injured, sick or orphaned birds of prey until they can be released back into the wild. It also conducts educational programs throughout the state.
3. PIGS Animal Sanctuary
A safe haven for abused, abandoned or neglected animals, PIGS has about 400 animals including potbellied pigs, farm pigs, horses, cats, dogs, and goats. As their name suggests, they specialize in pigs. The shelter has an annual open house where visitors can meet its residents.
4. The Good Zoo at Oglebay in Wheeling
The zoo offers visitors a chance to see more than 50 species of animals within the 30-acres of the zoo. Animals include African wild dogs, meerkats, spectacled bears, lemurs, red pandas, river otters and bald eagles.
5. The West Virginia State Wildlife Center
The West Virginia State Wildlife Center is a zoological park in French Creek, W.Va. that’s operated by the state Division of Natural Resources. The center has 338 acres and displays 29 different mammals, birds, and reptiles. The animal enclosures are spacious and in an actual forest. It has about 50,000 visitors a year.
