In West Virginia, waterfalling is not just a three-season sport. No, winter waterfalls around here are just as gorgeous as in any other season (and maybe even more so!). Have you ever taken the time, energy, and care required to seek them out? Here’s a taste of what you might find.
1. Glade Creek (Clifftop)
The iconic Glade Creek Gristmill in Babcock State Park is famous for its fall scenery, but it's just as breathtaking in winter, especially after a fresh coating of snow.
2. The Middle Falls of Hills Creek (Hillsboro)
The Falls of Hills Creek (upper, middle, and lower) can be a bit tricky to access in winter - you'll need snow boots with excellent traction, at minimum, and that's if you have a vehicle that can make it to the trailhead in winter. But the view of these falls in the coldest season of the year is well worth the journey.
3. The Lower Falls of Hills Creek (Hillsboro)
Especially be on the lookout for the reverse-volcano-like ice cone that often forms at the bottom of the lower falls!
4. Brush Creek Falls (Athens)
Brush Creek Falls, in a nature preserve not far from Princeton, West Virginia, is an impressive outcrop near the beginning of the trail that runs for several miles along Brush Creek. The rugged rock it cascades over is especially prominent when it's coated with a winter sheen of ice!
5. Blackwater Falls (Davis)
Blackwater Falls State Park gets plenty of cold and snow in the winter, and when this huge, iconic waterfall freezes over, it's a sight to behold. The steps down to the falls get quite icy and slick as well, so be careful!
6. Camp Creek Falls (Camp Creek)
Camp Creek Falls is located in Camp Creek State Park and Forest in Mercer County, West Virginia. The falls are adjacent to a campground that's cold but oh-so-beautiful in the winter snow!
7. Cathedral Falls (Gauley Bridge)
Cathedral Falls looks extra lacy when it's dripping with icicles! Find it just off of Route 60, one mile east of Gauley Bridge.
Which of these waterfalls have you seen bathed in winter beauty? What other waterfalls are good to visit in winter? Let us know!
And while you’re out and about enjoying the winter beauty of West Virginia, consider trying out another winter sport: sledding !
