Wine is probably the most versatile drink. Unlike any other beverage, wine evolves and changes flavor as it ages. So, it is no surprise that entire festivals are dedicated to it. Festivals like this one.
West Virginia Wine & Jazz Festival is an annual gathering of wine enthusiasts and fans of jazz music.
The festival, which takes place at Camp Muffly Park in Morgantown, is run by West Virginia Wine and Jazz Fest, Inc., a non-profit organization. All the proceeds they receive go back to the community.
This includes local area school programs, scholarships for the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Music, and the sponsorship of community schools and organizations that assist the festival.
At the festival you will find several booths set up from various wineries. The $20 per day ticket price includes a wine glass, a corkscrew and unlimited tastings for the day.
The sampling of wines in each booth varies. They have several varieties of reds and whites; anything from Chardonnay to Pinot Noir may be available.
West-Whitehill is one winery that will be returning for 2018. Others include Daniel Vineyards, Lambert’s Vintage Wines, and Potomac Highland Winery.
Then, of course, there's the jazz.
Various artists come to the festival venue every year to play some smooth jazz, of which the saxophone is always an integral part. With its New Orleans roots in blues and ragtime, the Jazz Age in the '20s facilitated the emergence of this genre of music, often thought of as America's form of classical music.
Wine and jazz have always gone together like bread and butter, and the combination of the two gives this festival a classical feel in a casual environment.
Of course, with wine there must also be food. At the 2018 festival, several vendors will be on hand, providing an assortment of foods. Vendors will include Cupcakerie, Garcia's Latin Market, Jersey Subs,
Lamberts, Madeleine Marie's Catering, Russ’ Ribs, Slight Indulgence, and The Greeks.
While you are enjoying your wine and have had the chance to pair it with some good food, you can visit the many artisans' booths at the festival.
You will be able to find wine accessories, such as glasses and handcrafted wooden cheese boards. There will also be an assortment of other items, such as handcrafted jewelry, steampunk jewelry, creative artwork, paintings, sculptures, pottery, clothes and soap.
There will definitely be no shortage of things to do at the festival - in fact, with the music playing and the wine flowing, you might never want to leave.
The 2018 festival will be held on Saturday, September 15 and Sunday, September 16. Saturday's hours are 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sundays hours are 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The festival will be held at Camp Muffly Park, located at 1477 Four-H Camp Rd. in Morgantown. There will also be a shuttle service traveling from The Mountainlair at WVU to the park grounds for the duration of the festival.
