“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas…just like the ones I used to know.” If your heart’s wish is to see West Virginia clothed in a beautiful white coat for Christmas, then you might be in luck! In a recently released prediction for Christmas 2020, AccuWeather announced that West Virginia’s Ohio Valley is more likely than usual to see snow on the ground this Christmas Day.
Senior Meteorologist Paul Pastelok, AccuWeather's lead long-range forecaster, has been making his list and checking it twice.
And while we may disagree about whether snow for Christmas belongs in "naughty" or "nice" (perhaps it depends on if you have travel plans or if you will be holed up in the comfort of your home for the holiday), here's what Pastolek says we can agree on:
The area that Pastelok specifically has in mind when he makes this prediction is the western portion of the state - including West Virginia's Ohio Valley region.
Historically, the western side of the state has a 25% to 50% chance of at least one inch of snow on the ground at Christmas, while the highlands of central West Virginia have a 50% to 75% chance.
But this year, western West Virginians can expect their chances to be closer to the same as the chances of their neighbors in the state's central higher regions.
How do you feel about a white Christmas to close out 2020? Would it help to make up for some of the unexpected challenges of the year, or would it only add insult to injury?
Time will soon tell whether or not a glistening white Christmas is in our future. In the meantime, crank up the Christmas music and get in some local Christmas shopping while you can!
