Waterfalls abound in West Virginia. Compared to all 50 states, West Virginia is on the small end in terms of geographic area, but we still have more than 200 documented waterfalls just begging to be explored, and perhaps that many more undocumented or unnamed cascades.
It should come as no surprise, then, that West Virginia just designated the first ever state-wide waterfall trail in the entire nation.
Featuring 29 West Virginia waterfalls, some famous, some barely known, this cutting edge waterfall trail is sure to delight. Plus, thanks to the West Virginia Tourism office, there are prizes for visiting some or all of these beautiful mountain cascades!
On the list of select West Virginia waterfalls that qualify for this particular waterfall trail challenge are both well known waterfalls and hidden gems.
Of course, Blackwater and Elakala Falls made the list, as did Sandstone Falls. But so did the lesser visited Finn's Falls.
The waterfall trail is fairly well distributed throughout the state, with waterfalls in almost every region of West Virginia...
... from Brush Creek down south near Princeton to Drawdy in Boone County to Oglebay in Wheeling in the state's Northern Panhandle.
Other waterfalls included on the list are Campbell Falls, Cathedral Falls, Dunloup Falls, Falls of Hills Creek, Falls of Pendleton, Glade Creek Falls, Glade Creek Gristmill Falls, High Falls of the Cheat, Mash Fork Falls, Marsh Fork/Black Fork Falls, Muddy Creek Falls, Mill Creek Falls of Kumbrabow, Mill Creek Falls of Hawk's Nest, Seneca Creek Falls, Turkey Creek Falls, Upper and Lower Falls of Holly River, Valley Falls, Whitaker Falls, Big Branch Falls, Kanawha Falls, Butcher Branch Falls, and Coonskin Grotto.
With all those choices, the only real question is which one to visit first!
To start a journey of your own along West Virginia's premier waterfall trail, you need to visit the WV Tourism website and request a West Virginia Waterfall Trail passport, which will be sent to your smart phone. Check off each waterfall you visited by "checking in" within five miles of the waterfall you visited (to allow for more reliable cell phone coverage).
Three waterfall check-ins qualify you for a custom sticker. Ten waterfall check-ins, and you'll receive a West Virginia waterfall water bottle. At twenty waterfall check-ins, you'll get the top prize: a West Virginia waterfall wanderer t-shirt.
So add a fun new beautiful twist to your next adventure through the state that's been recognized as a top-tier destination by Lonely Planet, TIME, Frommers, USA Today, and Condé Nast by exploring its wild, wonderful waterfalls!
Learn more about each waterfall and grab your mobile West Virginia Waterfall Passport at the West Virginia Tourism website. Interestingly, half a dozen of the falls featured on this waterfall trail in West Virginia are located in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, which you can learn more about visiting with our Ultimate Guide .
