The old adage, never judge a book by its cover, has never been more accurate than with this restaurant. It may not look like much on the outside, but the seafood you will eat there will change your mind in a second.
Jewel City Seafood in Huntington doesn't look like much from the outside. It is housed in a simple brick building next to a boarded-up storefront. No one passing by would have reason to think that the food there is particularly spectacular — but it is.
The restaurant got its name from an old maritime tradition. Ship captains delivering fresh seafood caught in the Chesapeake Bay would give each city a name for navigational purposes. Huntington's name was Jewel City, and so the restaurant adopted the moniker.
The restaurant is owned by Joe Beter and sits in its second location since the business opened years ago. By a fortuitous set of circumstances, when Joe was searching for a new location, he found that his family's old store that closed down decades before, called Beter Brothers, was up for sale. When you walk into Jewel City, you will see the words Beter Brothers set into the floor tiles.
For many years, this hidden gem was fairly unassuming, but if you walk in there on a Saturday night, this will be the crowd you can expect to see.
And the primary reason is the food. Jewel City has the freshest seafood you can possibly find in West Virginia, with a great variety. Not only can you sit down and eat, you can also come in a see the fresh seafood behind the glass counter and buy the items in bulk at market price, deli style.
All the food is served with your choice of sides, and the fish is generally served three ways: fried, grilled, or blackened. You can find everything from catfish to flounder on the menu, not to mention shrimp, crab, lobster, oysters, clams, and mussels. You can also choose from a large selection of po'boys and fish tacos.
The restaurant has many weekly specials, plus a varied selection of soups and salads. If you like soup, you definitely have to try their lobster bisque. You will not be disappointed. You can get their regular menu items, but you can also take advantage of their fresh, wild caught selections
Aside from their seafood selections, you can also get filet mignon, chicken, and a burger platter, if you so desire.
With everything that Jewel City has to offer, there is literally no type of seafood that seems to be missing from the menu or from the market counter. This is seafood done right, delivered fresh from the Chesapeake Bay and locations all around the globe; a seafood lover's paradise.
