Over the river and through the woods… sure, you can sing about it. But in West Virginia, you don’t have to stop there. One of the best hikes in the state takes you through five miles of beautiful, remote mountain country filled with pristine streams and lush forests. Lace up your hiking boots, because this is one magical journey you don’t want to miss!
As the sign says, welcome to Seneca Creek Backcountry. You've reached the home of one of West Virginia's best, most scenic hikes: the Seneca Creek Trail.
This picturesque hike takes you through meadows, over (and through!) creeks, and deep into the woods.
Along the way, you'll spot waterfalls, wildlife, and who knows what other delightful treasures.
In addition to all that, there's something else unique and enchanting that you'll get to experience as you hike the Seneca Creek Trail: tree tunnels.
That's right, this remote mountain path passes between rows of towering evergreens that form a cool, lush canopy overhead.
These spruce forests ensure a magical journey no matter the season (although, to be fair, this trail is best accessed between March and November).
There are a few things to note before you embark on a hike through this spruce tunnel wonderland.
The full trail is a 10-mile, out-and-back hike. You'll be crossing the creek several times. The trail is smooth and level for much of the way, but there are a few patches that are overgrown or rocky. Bring sturdy shoes and bug spray!
Still, with the right preparation, this hike is definitely one for the bucket list!
You can find the Seneca Creek Trailhead near Spruce Knob, on the Spruce Knob Lake side of Forest Road 112 before you reach the turn off to the knob itself.
Learn more at the USDA Forest Service website here . While you’re this close, don’t miss the view from the Spruce Knob Lookout Tower , either. And don’t forget your camera!
