Cabins and tents are pretty common in West Virginia campgrounds, but there is one campground that takes a more historical route in their accommodations.
Carl and Shirley Yokum began to form Yokum's Vacationland after they married in 1938. Sitting right at the base of Seneca Rocks, West Virginia's only true peak, Yokum's has a main building which serves as a motel, deli and store.
Their adjacent campgrounds offer places to stay while you visit Seneca Rocks and other nearby attractions, such as Spruce Knob (the highest point in West Virginia), Seneca Caverns, Smoke Hole Caverns, Canaan Valley Resort State Park, Blackwater Falls State Park, and Monongahela National Forest.
Yokum's also includes two campgrounds, each with several amenities, but the most unique is their teepee campground.
Hearkening back to an antiquated structure used by Plains Indians, the teepees of old were made of buffalo skin, stretched over wooden sticks to form a conical shape, which had smoke flaps at the top.
Several tribes lived in teepees, including Blackfoot, Comanche, Crow, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Plains-Cree, Hidatsa and Pawnee, to name a few.
Yokum's tee pees maintain the same basic structure, but are made of more permanent materials, and all of them have doors of varying designs that can be locked to secure your belongings.
Some of the doors are more traditional in design, while others are a bit more modern, altering the fully conical teepee shape to accommodate square doors and windows.
Aside from the teepees, there are other accommodations as well, such as their cabins, if you are looking for something slightly more modern for your stay in the area.
Each are fully furnished with a rustic design, creating a sense of luxury while also maintaining a cabin in the woods feel, complete with a nature inspired design.
Or, if you would rather just stay in a traditional motel room, Yokum's has a motel with large rooms that have the same rustic charm as the cabins.
In the motel, which bears the Yokum name, you will also find a deli and general store, once again with the same natural wood design of both the cabins and motel rooms.
The deli has a wide variety of food items and specials, including sliced meat and cheeses, breakfast, sandwiches and entrees, not to mention their popular hand-dipped Hershey’s ice cream. The general store provides a large variety of camping and grocery items, including firewood, ice and other necessities.
It's not uncommon for Yokum's to have occasional entertainment as well on its grounds. Some past events include their Ramp Dinner, Mountains & Music, and the Christmas Bluegrass Show.
So, if you are looking for a central spot in the Seneca Rocks area for a variety of nature-based activities, from cave tours to state parks, check out Yokum's Vacationland.
Yokum's Vacationland is located at 24570 Mountaineer Dr. in Seneca Rocks.
