Every year during the third week in May, something special this way comes – and this year is no exception. A decades-long tradition continues in West Virginia this spring: the West Virginia Strawberry Festival. And while each year’s festival line-up looks a little different, including this year’s, it’s still always one of the sweetest events around. Mark your calendars this year for May 13-15. 2021!
Begun in 1936 to encourage and promote local strawberry growers, this West Virginia staple has been going strong almost ever since.
And boy, has it grown since that inaugural year not much less than a century ago! What started as a one day event has expanded to fill up to eight days of fun and celebration, depending on the year.
The whole town comes together to make this event a success, even if it means being flexible with when, how, and where they put in their time and energy.
For example, in 2020 the West Virginia Strawberry Festival was canceled, but a Strawberry Yard Contest was still held, with houses all around the area jumping into the fun.
Did you know there are awards for festivals? And the West Virginia Strawberry Festival took home four of them last time the West Virginia Association of Fairs and Festivals Convention was held.
