There are many trails in West Virginia that lead to great views, but this trail has them all beat.
Spruce Knob Trail, located along the eastern edge of Monongahela National Forest, does more than lead you to a great view, but to the highest point in the state of West Virginia.
The trail system includes half-mile Whispering Spruce Trail, which loops around to reconnect to Spruce Knob Trail and the trailhead adjacent to 104. The Whispering Spruce offers more great views of the area.
From an elevation of 4,863 feet, the world is laid out before you and the mountains of Monongahela stretch off to the horizon like frozen waves on a green ocean. You are truly on top of the world.
