For many reasons, fall is an excellent time of year to take a drive through West Virginia. The weather is beautiful, the colors of the trees are spectacular…and Halloween is right around the corner! If spooky is your favorite time of year, then here’s a road trip you’ll definitely want to add to your bucket list this fall!
1. Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum (Weston)
This magnificent old structure has been partially converted into a museum that you can visit...and hear tales of the residents who were consigned to spend their days locked within these walls.
2. Silver Run Tunnel (North Bend Rail Trail)
Both the original
Silver Run Tunnel and the newer tunnel just in front of it are rumored to be haunted...one by voices, one by an actual woman dressed in white. These tunnels are part of the North Bend Rail Trail network; you're looking for Eaton Tunnel #21.
3. Blennerhassett Hotel (Parkersburg)
The
Blennerhassett Hotel is a beautiful, historic hotel in Parkersburg. You can peek in at the lobby even if you're not staying in the hotel overnight, but if you have time to extend the trip, this is where you want to spend the night! Blennerhassett Hotel offers comfortable rooms, excellent breakfasts, and some spooky rumors that you can speculate on to your heart's content.
4. West Virginia Penitentiary (Moundsville)
Who knows what
the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville has seen within its massive walls, but you can attempt to find out with a visit to this foreboding mansion, made even more solemn by the ancient burial mound just across the street.
5. Hempfield Tunnel (Wheeling)
Is it the graves that were disturbed in the making of the
Hempfield Tunnel that makes it so spooky, or is it the crimes that were committed within it?
6. Mt. Wood Overlook (Wheeling)
Featuring an abandoned castle and an old cemetery,
Mt. Wood Overlook is definitely a spot you want to visit if you're looking to be spooked...or if you're just looking for a beautiful fall view of the city!
Here’s a Google map of these spooky haunts in case you want to tackle them all in one trip. Alternatively, a fall hike past this old cemetery might be another good option.
