The "rocks" of Bear Rocks are comprised of sandstone, whose shapes have been carved by wind. Its peaks overlook the south branch of the Potomac River with a view that extends 35 miles out to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.
The large boulders can be found all over the area. Also in the area are several animal species native to Canada but unusual in West Virginia, such as the snowshoe hare, saw-whet owls and red-backed voles.
From up on high, Bear Rocks Preserve will give you views of West Virginia the likes of which you will not find anywhere else. Find the top and look across to the horizon stretching away in the distance. It is unlikely you will find a view more beautiful in the entire state.
