Seneca Rocks is one of a handful of scenes (including other icons like the New River Gorge Bridge and Glade Creek Gristmill) from around the state of West Virginia that have become famous as the face of the Mountain State. For good reason, too: the rugged, jagged profile of the rocks is an unforgettable sight. But do you know what makes the experience even more amazing? A horseback tour of these legendary cliffs!
A wide, peaceful trail meanders through West Virginia's most beautiful mountain country, heading up toward one of her most famous landmarks: Seneca Rocks.
The trail leads all the way to the top of the rock cliffs, to an observation deck with a spectacular view of Almost Heaven (that's West Virginia for you non-locals) that stretches for miles.
And while you can hike this trail, why do that when you have the option to ride to the top of Seneca Rocks on horseback, courtesy of Yokum's Stables?
Horseback tours of Seneca Rocks are available Thursday through Sunday from April through mid-November. Rides are 1.5 hours in length and cost $40 per rider. Rides depart at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m., but you'll need to arrive at least 30 minutes early to get saddled up.
Never ridden a horse before? That's okay! First-time riders are welcome, and Yokum's Stables's expert guides will take good care of you every step of the way. Even children ages six and above are welcome to participate!
The available slots for these horseback riding tours fill up quickly (with views like this waiting for you at the top, we're not surprised!), so advance reservations are suggested.
Yokum's Stables closes for the winter months, but typically begins taking reservations in the early spring in preparation for their April re-opening.
To learn more, you can visit Yokum’s Stables at their website or Facebook page . In the meantime, you might want to brush up on your knowledge of the area, including the intriguing, tragic Native American legend associated with these mighty cliffs .
