If you had to make a list of the safest spots to live in West Virginia, which cities would you pick? One company did just that, and their results might – or might not – surprise you.
If you already live in West Virginia, you know how many perks there are to calling this state home. But maybe you're one of the many people who is just learning about how wild and wonderful the Mountain State is, and you're looking to move here. We don't blame you!
The numbers are in, and Safewise has just released data on the safest cities to live in West Virginia for 2021. The 10 safest West Virginia cities, according to this website, are New Martinsville, Oak Hill, Weston, Weirton, Charles Town, Ranson, Morgantown, Moundsville, Nitro, and St. Albans, in that order.
As the number one safest city, New Martinsville in Wetzel County has a population of 5,114.
Does this list surprise you? Maybe you were expecting a much different line-up. Maybe you anticipated seeing your own town on the list.
At number two was Oak Hill in Fayette County, population 8,140.
Just because a town didn't make Safewise's cut doesn't mean it's not safe; it just means that either the town didn't reach Safewise's population threshold or it didn't submit a complete crime report to the FBI in 2019.
Number 3 was Weston in Lewis County, population 3,887.
In fact, only 11 West Virginia cities met the qualifications for the Safewise rankings, meaning there are plenty of other great, safe places to live around the state.
Weirton in Brooke and Hancock Counties was number 4, population 18,296.
Another bit of good news about living in West Virginia? As a whole, West Virginia reports fewer crime rates per capita than the national average, and West Virginians report feeling less concerned than the average American about crime and safety.
And number 5 was Charles Town in Jefferson County, population 6,171.
Of course, this is all good news, but it’s not the only reason we love living in the Mountain State. Here are 13 more good reasons to call West Virginia home.
