When you think about riverboats, what typically comes to mind is the mighty Mississippi River, and the sternwheel crafts that operate on it. But did you know that WV has its own sternwheel river boat? Located on the broad Ohio River along the western edge of the state, the Island Belle Sternwheeler operates between Point Park in Parkersburg, WV and historic Blennerhassett Island in the middle of the Ohio.
At the end of a 20 minute ride, you get to experience the enchantment of historic Blennerhassett Island. You can enjoy the mansion, a horse drawn wagon ride, bicycle rentals, gift shop, concession stand, or simply a self-guided walking tour to explore the island. You should allow a minimum of three hours for your visit to Blennerhassett Island.
Like the mansion, the historic Putnam-Houser House, which was transported to the island from Belpre, OH is open for tours Fridays through Sundays. Tours are free and guided by docents.
Other artifacts and items can be seen on display at the Blennerhassett Regional History Museum, featuring three stories of exhibits, a video display telling the story of the Blennerhassetts and a gift shop. From Indian archeology, Blennerhassett history, early automotive and farm history, to Ohio River boat history, war memorabilia, and early household items, there is something here for everyone! The Museum is located on the corner of Second and Juliana streets in Parkersburg. They are open year-round. The Museum is the main point of contact for ticket purchases, group tours and event information.
Visits to the island provide visitors with the opportunity to take mansion tours guided by docents in period clothing and take narrated wagon rides. There are also bicycle rentals, a gift shop and a concession stand. A volunteer-operated golf cart is also available for those with mobility issues.
The Island Belle is also available for charters when not transporting visitors between Parkersburg and the island.
The schedule for Blennerhassett Island from May 4 – June 10 is Tuesday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and Sunday, noon until 5:30 p.m. The Blennerhassett Museum opens one hour prior to the first boat departure.
Additional hours of operation for the summer season for the museum, the island, and the Island Belle are posted on The park website. Or call 304-420-4800.
