While many of the most notable legends in West Virginia (think Mothman) are surrounded by dark tales and suspense, there’s a living legendary figure in The Mountain State that will surprise you in the best way possible. Even though so little is known about the creature known as the Powell’s Mountain Goat, it may be the most famous mammal around.
It lives on Powell's Mountain and has quite a following among those who regularly travel Route 19 between Summersville and Interstate 79.
Goats are widely known for being stubborn and one legend surrounding how this goat came to live on this mountain demonstrates just how stubborn a goat can be.
It's said she used to live on a nearby farm but escaped. When she was discovered living up on this roadside perch, she was brought back to the farm (more than once), but kept escaping... always to be found here on top of Powell's Mountain. Eventually, the farmer just let her stay. (But don't worry... she has plenty of humans looking after her now... )
Powell's Mountain is the stretch of Route 19 between mile marker 52.5 and 53 where a large part of the mountain was excavated in order to build a wide and deep cut through the rock.
Goats are known to be a herding kind of animal, and when a goat is on its own, it often seeks companionship from mankind. Perhaps that's why she's always seen watching the cars and trucks pass by.
She's been known to show up on either side of the cut or (on rare occasions) down by the road. However, she's most often spotted on the South side of the highway.
Folks like to play a game similar to Where’s Waldo, only it’s Where’s the Goat? Have you spotted this legendary creature that lives on Powell’s Mountain? She’s so popular, she even has her own Facebook page with more than 12,000 followers! You can follow it here!
