In fact, the old-timers have a name for this phenomenon. It's one of several "little winters" scattered throughout a traditional Appalachian spring - more specifically, this one is probably a "blackberry winter."
This "May 10-ish" freeze is the bane of gardeners everywhere, and this one is predicted to be particularly harsh.
