One of the top New Year’s Resolutions every January is to get more exercise. And throughout the year, it continues to be a challenge that many strive to conquer because they want to enjoy some of exercise’s many benefits, like health, fitness, endorphins. But to really amplify these benefits, skip the gym and head outside to work out! Here are some suggestions of great spots to go that will really get your heart pumping!
The climb up this steep hill outside Sarah Ann, West Virginia to visit the grave of Devil Anse Hatfield and his family will provide you with a good workout, some beautiful scenery, and a fascinating glimpse of an infamous family feud. Please be respectful of those buried in this cemetery by taking only photos and leaving only footprints!
A stroll along the portion of the Appalachian Trail that meanders through Harpers Ferry provides all sorts of opportunity for exercise! Take the stairs to St. Peters or Jefferson Rock or Harper Cemetery. Cross the Potomac on a footbridge that parallels the train tracks. You can even join up with the C&O Canal Towpath or the Potomac Heritage Trail for even more variety!
The hike down (and back up again!) to the best overlook of the New River Gorge Bridge from the Canyon Rim Visitor Center is quite a steep one, but it's well worth the view!
Have you conquered any of these climbs? Which is your favorite? Where else do you go to get a good workout in wild, wonderful West Virginia? Let us know in the comments!
