If you’re from West Virginia, you should totally understand these things:
1. Sometimes West Virginians will stick their middle finger and thumb up when you ask them where in West Virginia they live.
We don't mean any offense, we're just making a map of the state.
2. Autumn is the most beautiful time of the year.
Who could argue with that?
3. This is a buggy.
Not a cart.
4. Hot dogs are best with chili, mustard and coleslaw.
Yum!
5. Kanawha is pronounced “Kuh-nah.”
Don't ask why. It just is.
6. The town in Putnam County is not pronounced like the storm.
It's Hurr-uh-cuhn.
7. Everyone knows John Denver's "Country Roads" but no one sings it with as much conviction as a West Virginian.
Even if we think maybe John was actually talking about Western Virginia...
8. June 20 is a day to be celebrated like your birthday.
Or maybe like the birthday of a close friend. That's West Virginia Day!
9. The summer heat isn't bad but the humidity will nearly kill you.
Seriously though.
10. It’s Appa-Latch-uh, not Appa-Lay-shuh.
Get it right.
11. Deer are more of a hazard on the road than other drivers are.
They seem to come out of nowhere.
12. This is soda. Or pop. Or soda pop.
It really just depends on where you're from in the state. A lot of northerners call it soda. I grew up calling it pop in the Charleston area.
13. West Virginia is equally wild and wonderful.
And we love it.
Do you agree that these are some things that those in West Virginia know to be true? What else would you add to this list? Let me know in the comments.
