Unlike your typical campground, this retreat likes to do things a little differently, from unique accommodations to unconventional ways to relax, this place marches to the beat of a different drum.
Three Otters Eco Retreat has a philosophy, one that is based on several studies which suggest that modern people's tendency to remain indoors, watching TV or Internet, has increased depression, obesity rates, narcissism, distraction, aggression, memory loss, and increases the likelihood of certain diseases.
One proven remedy, especially popular in Japan, is nature therapy, which studies have shown can reduce stress and enhance pleasure, attention and memory. That is the primary goal of Three Otters, to offer busy a people a place to relax and reduce the stress of everyday life.
Their solution is the unusual Three Beavers Eco Retreat.
For starters, the accommodations are not what you would call typical. There are several campers you can choose to stay in, or if you are feeling nostalgic, a retro camper.
Or if you would rather have a more primitive, yet alternative type of accommodation, you may choose to rent a floating tent.
The tents are strapped to the trees from an elevated position, usually about three to four feet off the ground. The tents, created by Tentsile, "offer an incredible way for you and your friends to experience the great outdoors in style, comfort, unrestricted by ground conditions and with increased separation from wetness, bugs and other creepies."
Accessible by a door in the tent floor, these tents are low enough to the ground to climb inside, but high enough that certain issues associated with ground tents are eliminated.
You also have the option to stay in a yurt, a semi-permanent structure with a bit more room and stability than you would get from a tent.
The yurt interior is equipped with a bed, table and chairs, and a hardwood floor.
You can also stay in a lodge, a cabin, a bell tent (tee-pee shaped) or big Agnes Tent (large dome tent). Additional amenities include a river kitchen, riverfront deck, bathhouse, screened grill pavilion, and a party/wedding tent.
Aside from atypical accommodations, even the way you camp is unusual at the retreat, such as enjoying a floating fire pit...
Or a lawn chair knee high in the river. Aside from camping, the retreat offers several activities on site, including kayaking, hiking, biking, scavenger hunts, Frisbee golf and geocaching.
Three Otters Eco Retreat is located at 8497 Low Line Road in Great Cacapon.
