The Towering Hemlocks At Cathedral State Park Are Some Of The Oldest Trees In West Virginia

Here in West Virginia, exploring the great outdoors is one of our favorite pastimes. If you’re looking for a low-key adventure take a walk alongside some of the oldest trees in the Mountain State. The trails at Cathedral State Park wind through towering hemlocks giving visitors a scenic and serene experience.
Designated a National Natural Landmark, Cathedral State Park is home to West Virginia's largest old-growth forest. Spend the day under the canopy of these ancient trees on the park's three miles of trails.
Located near Aurora, the 133-acre park contains the only stand of virgin hemlock. Relatively undisturbed over time, many of the trees are estimated to be between 350 - 500 years old.
The shortest trail in the park leads to the largest tree. Take a 0.2-mile stroll down the Giant Hemlock Trail to encounter the mighty giant!
The eastern hemlock has a circumference of 21 whopping feet and stretches way up into the sky.
A variety of other trails are also worth exploring. Enjoy the quiet and the shade provided by the lofty canopy overhead.
Cathedral State Park is not only full of wonderful trails it's a picnicker's paradise too. Pack a lunch and enjoy a meal in this idyllic setting.
