Some people just don’t get it and may think West Virginians have a few quirks. But even if we do, we embrace the things that make us unique. And we’re always prepared to shrug off an unsolicited stare or unwanted criticism whenever we’re traveling and do any of the following normal-to-us things:
1. Cringe when anyone mispronounces Appalachian.
It can be oh-so difficult to hold our tongue when it happens. But afterall, when someone from Bah-ston visits West Virginia, we don't tell them they should be saying "Boston," do we? Still... just hearing App-a-LAY-shun makes us shudder, even if we're being polite by not correcting someone on their own turf .
2. Ask for a dog with slaw.
Most people outside of the Mountain State don't even know what 'slaw' is... you have to practically spell it out and say the full word, 'coleslaw,' and then be prepared for the looks you'll get.
3. Shout "... Mountaineers!" anytime someone says, "Let's go... "
People may not understand the primal instinct to always respond accordingly when you hear "let's go... " But they have to admire our loyalty and enthusiasm WVU.
4. Add an "r" to some of your words.
It's perfectly normal to say "waRsh" instead of "wash." We don't sound funny, they do!
5. Decline a Thanksgiving dinner invitation from a relative living in a neighboring state...
... because you'd rather get up early and go deer hunting for most of the day.
6. Pull out your parachute...
... and ask where is the nearest bridge you can jump from.
7. Break into full song at the top of your lungs when you hear John Denver's "Country Roads" playing.
Do it anywhere in the Mountain State and you're likely to get a chorus going with a group of total strangers; but outside the Mountain State you're likely to get some rude stares.
8. Show up at a covered dish dinner...
... with a casserole featuring RAMPS. You'll probably be allowed to stay, but your dish may be escorted off the property.
9. Break out a birthday cake on June 20th.
It's true, here in the Mountain State we celebrate West Virginia Day like it's our own birthday.
10. Have the audacity to ask if the restaurant has pepperoni rolls.
You can't help it if you're craving food from home!
11. Admit we love life in small town West Virginia.
Some people just don't get it.
