It would be difficult at best to rival Niagara Falls, right? But since we have your undivided attention, let’s dive into the spectacular natural wonders dwelling in West Virginia. The tallest waterfall in the Mountain State is approaching 60 feet tall – Blackwater Falls in Blackwater Falls State Park. Today we are starting our natural wonder hike in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is three miles east of Fayetteville. It is a natural wonder in its own right - with trails, waterfalls, and views of that gorge to get your heart pumping.

Within the national park, the Butcher Branch Trail, leading to Butcher Branch Falls, begins from the Kaymoor parking area.

The trail, generally considered to be easy, is just over 1.5 miles round trip, out and back. Allow an hour, leashed dogs are welcome.
You have begun the descent down from the rim of the gorge.

Some rock scrambling brings you to the base of the falls, watch for slippery rocks. The falls can run a bit dry if it hasn’t rained lately.
Butcher Branch Falls is a series of cascades falling 40 feet down a sandstone wall.

This trail connects to the Long Point and Kaymoor Miners trails. If you haven’t seen Sandstone Falls, the largest waterfall in the park at 1,500 feet wide, be sure to take a look before you leave.

If there is one thing I am sure of, it’s that West Virginia has a wealth of natural wonders for you to discover, including at least 200 waterfalls. Take this hike to see the natural wonder that is Butcher Branch Falls, and to explore New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.
